Alan McKean

Alan McKean, Secretary/Treasurer

Alan is President of the San Luis Obispo Veteran’s Services Collaborative in San Luis Obispo, CA.

Alan is a Disabled Veteran Outreach Program Specialist with the Employment Development Department of the State of California.

Alan has had a diverse professional history that includes employment in leadership positions in the for-profit advertising, printing, and education segments as well as the non-profit communities.

Alan’s non-profit experience includes positions such as executive director of the American Red Cross for Eastern Iowa in Waterloo, Iowa, founding trustee, incorporator and museum director for the USS Hornet Foundation and Museum in Alameda, CA, founder of the Jack London Museum in Oakland, CA, founding member of the Vietnam Veterans Leadership Program Chapter in San Francisco, CA, fundraising section leader for the Vietnam War Memorial in Washington, D.C., and founding member of the Veterans History Project in Waterloo, Iowa. He has also served as an advisor and docent for several other organizations.

Civilian employment includes duties as a sports and general assignment writer for the Oakland Tribune and San Francisco Chronicle, account manager for advertising agency Dancer, Fitzgerald and Sample, Public Relations Director for Saint Mary’s College of Moraga, CA, sales manager for Dynasty and Eastwind Printing Companies of San Francisco, and as an Executive Recruiter for Bradford Staff of San Francisco.

McKean is a U.S. Navy veteran and is a “mustang”, having served in both enlisted and commissioned status. He saw service in Viet Nam as a gunner’s mate/weapons specialist with Advanced tactical Support Base, Ben Keo, River Division 594 from 1968-70, then public affairs duties with VR-1 in Norfolk, VA, and VXN-8 in Patuxent River, MD. His final active service was as a public affairs manager for the Navy Recruiting Command, Albuquerque, New Mexico from 1971 – 73. He received a direct appointment as an Ensign in the Naval Reserve in 1975, with public affairs and general line officer assignments with Special Warfare Staff 220, Alameda, CA, Special Warfare Group Coronado, CA, and also with Military Sealift Command, Pacific, Oakland, CA, as a Lieutenant. Decorations include the Bronze Star with Combat “V” Device, Navy Commendation Medal with Combat “V” Device, Combat Action Ribbon, Presidential Unit Citation, Navy Unit Citation, and other campaign, service and foreign awards.

Alan is a graduate of the California State University, Hayward, and also attended the University of California, the University of New Mexico, and Laney College of Oakland, CA.

Alan and his wife of 30 years, Melissa, reside in Atascadero, CA. They have five children and 10 grandchildren.
